Rosendale Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes                                           October 20, 2021

Present: Commissioners  Fre Atlast, Kristina Carr, Lisa Jerkowski, Frank Klepeis, Kieran Liggan-Casey, Reta Sorge; Recreation Clerk Dorene Whitaker; Town Board Liason Ernest Klepeis.

Absent: Commissioner Dave Hattenbrun.

The meeting was called to order at 7:15 pm.

OLD BUSINESS:

  1. Old meeting minutes: K. Carr reported a need for an amendment to the minutes for the September 15, 2021 meeting. In the section pertaining to the La Finca Winter Soccer Proposal, discussion of advertising was omitted. The group had planned to place advertisements for their sponsors on the walls of the Pavilion structure, but they were advised that there is a ban on advertising on Municipal property. K. Liggan-Casey  moved  that the minutes be approved with this amendment. Seconded by L. Jerkowski, All in favor.
  2. 2. LaFinca Winter Soccer: E. Klepeis reported that this program has been approved by the Town Board.
  3. Shade for the Pool: Rosendale now has a Senior Committee, with members appointed by the Town Board. They have suggested shades for the Town Pool. The Rec Commission will take this over, obtain specs, check with the Health Department, and hopefully have safe, appropriate shade shelters installed for the 2022 Pool season.

NEW BUSINESS:

  1. Donation from Rosendale RUNS: L. Jerkowski reported that the recent event was a success and the Shawangunk Runners Cub will donate approximately $600 to the Recreation Department.
  2. Rec Center Broadband: D. Whitaker reported that today the installation of Broadband at the Rec Center was completed, and reception is excellent.
  3. Proposed Makers Market at Willow Kiln Park: Melissa Hewitt from the Circle Creative Collective, a local non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of traditional craft, presented a proposal to hold a Winter Makers Market at Willow Kiln Park on Saturday, December 4. The group has had 3 previous similar events elsewhere locally in the past. The plan is for  vendors, who pay a donation to the non-profit, to sell their wares from 11-3, follow by a lumninaria workshop and a dusk procession to the Trestle. Food will be served and fires lit in cauldrons. Attendance is estimated at 80 people. K. Carr moved that the Rec Commission approve this event, pending clearance from the Fire Marshall, the Police Department,  the Highway Department, the Town Clerk to whom an Event Application and  Site Plan must be submitted, and the Wallkill Valley Land Trust. Seconded by Fre Atlast.  All in favor.
  4. Recreation Center Rentals: D. Whitaker raised the issue of again renting out the Rec Center Building for private events. This has been an important source of revenue in the past and a resource for the community. The Health Department has removed many of its former restrictions on gatherings, but a search for a cleaner to check the building after events and clean appropriately has been unsuccessful. E. Klepeis suggested recruiting Youth Center aides.  The Commissioners had concerns about full-capacity gatherings due to persistence of Covid-19 in the community.  K. Carr moved  that rentals of the building resume with the following stipulations:  Mask use required and capacity reduced  50%, to 100 persons, pending the hiring of a cleaner. Seconded by F. Klepeis. All in favor.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:05 pm. The next meeting is November 17 at 7:15 pm.

Respectfully submitted,
Kristina Carr, Chair
